Blackstone Lake

A deep, island-dotted Parry Sound lake defined by water-access cottages and a boating link to Crane Lake.

Blackstone Lake is a deep inland cottage lake in the Township of The Archipelago, approximately 15 kilometres south of Parry Sound. Its nine islands, predominantly water-access properties and navigable connection to Crane Lake give it a distinctive cottage-country character (Blackstone Lake Cottagers Association, n.d.-a; Township of The Archipelago, 2019).

About the Lake

Blackstone Lake is approximately five kilometres long by three kilometres wide and is primarily a seasonal cottage lake. The Township identifies most properties as water-access and maintains policies intended to preserve that character. Municipal planning documents also recognize Blackstone as an important sport-fishing lake with sensitive shoreline areas and cold-water habitat (Blackstone Lake Cottagers Association, n.d.-a; Township of The Archipelago, 2019).

Reading the shoreline

Lake Shape & Shoreline Character

Blackstone Lake has a compact but irregular outline with nine islands and numerous bays breaking up the main basin. Its shoreline includes areas of steep slopes and sensitive habitat, while a navigable river extending to Crane Lake adds an important feature to both its outline and boating geography (Blackstone Lake Cottagers Association, n.d.-a; Township of The Archipelago, 2019).

Things to Do

Recreation on Blackstone Lake is strongly water-focused, with boating, paddling, fishing and cottage activities forming much of the lake experience. The Blackstone Lake Cottagers Association also organizes stewardship paddles that explore shoreline water quality and fish habitat, reflecting the lake community’s strong emphasis on environmental stewardship (Blackstone Lake Cottagers Association, 2025).

Boating

Boating is especially important on Blackstone because the majority of shoreline properties are water-access, supported by two small marina facilities. A navigable river also connects Blackstone Lake directly to Crane Lake, allowing boaters to travel between the two without trailering their boat. This connection, combined with the lake’s islands and irregular shoreline, makes boating central to both transportation and recreation (Township of The Archipelago, 2019; Blackstone Lake Cottagers Association, n.d.-a).

Fishing

Blackstone Lake supports lake trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, muskellunge, black crappie, walleye, northern pike and yellow perch. Lake trout do not currently sustain the population through natural reproduction, so the lake is stocked with yearling trout on a regular cycle; Ontario’s stocking records show 2,000 lake trout stocked in both 2023 and 2025 (Township of The Archipelago, 2025; Government of Ontario, n.d.).

Swimming

Swimming on Blackstone Lake is primarily cottage-oriented rather than centred on a municipal public beach. The Township identifies most shoreline properties as water-access, while members of the lake association describe swimming as a regular part of cottage life on Blackstone (Township of The Archipelago, 2019; Blackstone Lake Cottagers Association, n.d.-b).

Nearby Communities

Parry Sound

Blackstone Lake lies approximately 15 kilometres south of Parry Sound, which serves as the nearest major community and regional service centre. The lake itself remains comparatively secluded, sitting west of Highway 400 within the Township of The Archipelago (Blackstone Lake Cottagers Association, n.d.-a).
