Reading the shoreline

Lake Shape & Shoreline Character

Horseshoe Lake has an irregular outline with a broad main basin, islands, indented bays and a narrower northern arm. Its 31-kilometre perimeter and additional island shoreline create a more complex shape than a compact, rounded lake (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2016).

Along the northern arm, the Horseshoe Lake Conservation Reserve includes exposed bedrock, sandy and gravelly lowlands, and mature forest. For boaters, the lake combines wider central water with narrower bays and shoreline passages (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2004).

Things to Do

Horseshoe Lake supports boating, paddling, fishing and public beach recreation. Horseshoe Lake Beach includes a sandy beach, swim raft, picnic tables and playground equipment, while the public launch at Allan Crescent provides boat access. The protected northern arm can also be approached from the lake by boat (Seguin Township, n.d.-a; Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2004).

Boating

Seguin Township maintains a public gravel boat launch and dock at 7B Allan Crescent. Horseshoe Lake’s irregular shoreline, islands and narrower northern waters provide a mix of open cruising and more enclosed boating areas. Unlike lakes with managed navigation systems, Horseshoe Lake’s water level is not regulated (Seguin Township, n.d.-b; Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2016).

Fishing

Horseshoe Lake supports a warm- and cool-water fish community led by smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and northern pike. Yellow perch, cisco, rock bass and several smaller species are also documented. The lake is not currently stocked, and historic efforts to manage it for lake trout were discontinued after poor assessment results (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2016).

Swimming

Horseshoe Lake Beach provides a public sandy beach, swim raft, picnic tables, playground equipment and seasonal washroom facilities. This gives the lake a more accessible public swimming option than many smaller cottage lakes where swimming is centred almost entirely around private shorelines (Seguin Township, n.d.-a).

Nearby Communities

Humphrey, Orrville and Parry Sound

Horseshoe Lake lies in Seguin Township approximately 13 kilometres east-southeast of Parry Sound. Humphrey and Orrville are nearby Seguin communities, while Parry Sound serves as the main regional service centre (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2004; Seguin Township, 2026).
