Lake Joseph

Lake Joseph is well suited to boating, paddling, fishing and quieter waterfront recreation. Lake Joseph Centennial Beach in Seguin provides a sandy beach, dock, picnic tables and boat launch, while nearby Port Sandfield offers views across the lake. The historic Hazelwood Trail also runs between the Port Carling area and Port Sandfield through mature hardwood forest and granite terrain (Seguin Township, n.d.; Township of Muskoka Lakes, n.d.-a, n.d.-b).

Public boating access includes launches at Foot’s Bay and Glen Orchard, as well as Lake Joseph Centennial Beach in Seguin. Lake Joseph is directly connected to Lake Rosseau through the Joseph River, allowing boaters to continue into the wider Muskoka lake system without removing the boat from the water. The lake’s depth, islands and irregular shoreline create a boating experience centred on long open reaches mixed with narrower passages around islands and points (Township of Muskoka Lakes, n.d.-c; Seguin Township, n.d.; Transport Canada, 2026).

Lake Joseph is especially distinguished by its lake-trout fishery. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources describes it as the premier lake-trout lake in the Parry Sound District, with excellent habitat and natural reproduction. Other major species include lake whitefish, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, burbot, walleye and largemouth bass. The MNR also notes that much of the lake-trout fishing effort has historically occurred during winter (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2018).

Public swimming access is available at Lake Joseph Centennial Beach at 276 Clear Lake Road in Seguin. The site includes a sandy beach, picnic tables, a dock reached by trail and a gravel boat launch, giving visitors a smaller-scale cottage-country swimming area rather than a large urban waterfront beach (Seguin Township, n.d.).
