Crane Lake

Crane Lake has a highly irregular, multi-basin outline with numerous bays, islands and narrow sections. The Blackstone River passes through the eastern and central portions of the lake, adding to its branching appearance (Crane Lake Association, 2015).

Much of the shoreline is rocky and forested, while wetlands occur in several protected bays and along the western basin. This mix creates alternating open reaches and narrower passages for boaters (Crane Lake Association, 2015).

Boaters can travel directly from Crane Lake to Blackstone Lake through the Blackstone River using motorized or non-motorized watercraft without taking the boat out of the water. The 2015 Lake Plan identified one formal public access point from Blackstone Crane Lake Road, along with several privately operated launches. Crane Lake’s bays, islands and narrow sections make navigation an important part of the boating experience (Crane Lake Association, 2015).

Crane Lake supports lake trout, walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, yellow perch, black crappie and several other species. The Township of The Archipelago identifies Crane Lake as a lake-trout lake, and Ontario’s stocking records show that 1,500 lake trout were stocked in 2022 and another 1,200 in 2024 (Crane Lake Association, 2015; Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, n.d.; Township of The Archipelago, 2019).

Swimming on Crane Lake is primarily associated with cottages and community recreation rather than a large municipal beach. The lake association identifies swimming and other water activities as important parts of lake life, and the annual Crane Lake regatta has traditionally included swimming races (Crane Lake Association, 2015).
