About the Lake

Georgian Bay is part of Lake Huron and is separated from its main basin by the Bruce Peninsula and Manitoulin Island. Its large basin includes deep offshore water as well as a remarkably complex eastern coastal zone. Ontario identifies Georgian Bay as the largest bay on the Great Lakes, while its fisheries range from nearshore bass, walleye, pike and muskellunge to offshore lake trout and salmon (Girihagama et al., 2022; Government of Ontario, n.d.).

Reading the shoreline

Lake Shape & Shoreline Character

Georgian Bay has a broad main basin, but its eastern shoreline breaks into a maze of islands, bays and narrow channels. The Thirty Thousand Islands archipelago extends for more than 150 kilometres along this coast, creating an exceptionally intricate map outline (Girihagama et al., 2022).

The eastern shore is strongly associated with exposed Canadian Shield rock, windswept pines, shoals and island passages, while other portions of the bay include glacial and limestone shorelines. This contrast creates everything from sheltered island routes to large open-water crossings (Government of Ontario, n.d.; Parks Canada, 2024).

Things to Do

Georgian Bay offers boating, paddling, fishing, swimming, hiking and island camping on a scale unlike the inland lakes profiled on the site. Georgian Bay Islands National Park protects dozens of islands near Honey Harbour, with visitor facilities on Beausoleil Island including trails, camping, docks and swimming areas. The park itself is accessible only by boat (Parks Canada, 2026a).

Boating

Boating ranges from protected passages among eastern Georgian Bay’s islands to exposed crossings across the open bay. Parks Canada warns that numerous islands, channels and shoals can make navigation challenging, while winds can quickly produce rough conditions on open water; nautical charts are recommended (Parks Canada, 2024, 2026b).

Georgian Bay is also the western end of the Trent–Severn Waterway. From Port Severn, recreational boats can travel through the 386-kilometre lock system all the way to Lake Ontario without being removed from the water (Parks Canada, 2026c).

Fishing

Georgian Bay supports both nearshore and offshore fisheries. Ontario identifies walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge and yellow perch among important nearshore species, while lake trout, Chinook salmon and rainbow trout support offshore recreational fishing. Lake whitefish, walleye and lake trout are also important commercial species (Government of Ontario, n.d.).

Swimming

Swimming opportunities vary considerably around Georgian Bay’s enormous shoreline. At Georgian Bay Islands National Park, beaches and swimming areas are found along the eastern shore of Beausoleil Island and in sheltered locations such as Cedar Spring, Wana Keta, Sandpiper and Honeymoon Bay. Parks Canada notes that these beaches are unsupervised and water quality is not routinely monitored, so swimmers should assess current conditions before entering the water (Parks Canada, 2026d).

Nearby Communities

Parry Sound, Midland, Penetanguishene, Honey Harbour, Collingwood and Owen Sound

Because Georgian Bay is so large, there is no single principal waterfront community. Parry Sound serves the eastern-central coast, Honey Harbour and Midland provide access to southeastern Georgian Bay and its islands, while Collingwood and Owen Sound are important communities along the southern and southwestern shoreline (Canadian Hydrographic Service, 2025; Parks Canada, 2026a).
